Newsletter #3 November 3: November School Newsletter
- Congratulations! Juliana has been permanently hired as a teacher for the Home Learners’ Program! She will be here two days a week; on Tuesdays and Thursdays. She comes with a wealth of experience, talent and great ideas to make our program even better!!
Request Form: Request Form for educational allotment use.
- New Parent Resource: We now have the classic home learner text in our classroom library: Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.
- Art Supplies: Next week, and for a couple of weeks thereafter, we will be doing Mask Making from a historical, multicultural and theatrical perspective. This will tie-in nicely, also, with the season, and, for those who are involved, the Carousel Theatre program. If you have any 4 litre milk jugs, kindly save them and bring them in for this project. The children are also very interested in making a walk-in “haunted house.” If you happen to have any pieces of cardboard from boxes or what-have-you, please bring them in for our house construction.
- Staffing: Good news! The Vancouver School Board has approved a part time teaching position for the program. The new teacher will join us on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The hiring process is now underway with the date of a new, permanent, teacher joining the program to be determined. Right now, please welcome our new temporary teacher, Julianna!
- October 5, 2009 Notice from the Vice Principal: There has been a case of head lice in the school. Please check your child’s scalp for the presence of lice and nits. Please remember that it is important to remove all the nits and to check everyone in the house. For your information, lice do not transmit disease, and although they are a nuisance they are not a health hazard. Best practices are repeated and thorough use of a nit comb until all nits are removed. Also, there is no evidence that a major clean-up of the house environment is necessary or effective in getting rid of head lice.
- If you do find lice or eggs in your child’s hair, please do not send them back to school until her/his hair has been treated. If you need further information, please call the North Health Unit at 604-872-2511.
- Frog Hollow Pumpkin Patch: The annual field trip to the Frog Hollow Pumpkin Patch is planned for October 22nd from 9:40 to 11:30. This is an optional field trip. Frog Hollow is planning the Patch for K-1 students (and little siblings). The 22nd is a Thursday, so the regular programming of Music and Knitting will still be happening. The only other class from Garibaldi participating is the K/1, so we will have a nice smaller-sized group going together. The cost is $5.00 and the permission forms are located in the Parent Notice box.
- Skating Field Trip November 9th: The permission forms have not been prepared yet. I will let you know when those are available. Also, I am finding out what the cost would be if home learners arrive there on their own steam and/or have their own skates, as both the school bus and skates are included in the $5.00 fee. Stay tuned.
