The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia is back with a little caterpillar, along with an assortment of favourite puppet characters. The triple-bill includes the wonderful story of THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR’s metamorphosis into a beautiful butterfly; the fanciful account of LITTLE CLOUD’s travels through the sky, and the MIXED-UP CHAMELEON’s discovery of his own unique nature. These whimsical tales illuminate the stage through magical puppetry.

The sign up sheet and consent forms for our fieldtrip on Wednesday, November 26, to Axis Theatre’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar are on the parent table.  Please fill out the necessary forms and return to your teacher’s file if your child would like attend.

 

Field trip to the VSO

On November 20, we will be attending a performance by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at the Orpheum theatre.  The field trip consent forms and sign up sheet are on the parent table.  If you would like to participate in this field trip, please fill out a form and return to your teacher’s file.

Kindergarten Hearing Screening

Our class will take part in the province-wide Hearing Screening Program on Wednesday, October 29, at 9:45 am.

Screeners will use headphones to see how your child hears sounds of different pitches in each ear.  Ear drum movement may be checked if necessary.

If you do not wish your child to be screened and/or do not want the school principal to be informed of the screening results, please contact and inform the Community Audiology Centre directly at 604-659-1100 prior to the screening date above.

Carousel Theatre – Busytown

A fieldtrip is scheduled for Thursday, March 13, 2014 (next week!!) to Carousel Theatre.   If you are interested in  joining us, please put your name down on the sign up sheet, fill out a consent form and return it to your teacher’s file as soon as possible.

Betsy Bear (Devon Busswood), Lowly Worm (Allan Zinyk) and Huckle Cat (Colin Sheen) in BUSYTOWN!

Richard Scarry’s beloved world comes to life in this charming musical!  The little ones will love the bright colors, the dance-in-your-seat melodies and the fun costumes! Join Huckle Cat, Lowly Worm, Betsy Bear and the rest of the gang as we discover and explore what people do all day!  Huckle shows us how Farmer Pig and Grocer Cat work together to bring food to the town. Construction Worker and his crew build new houses, and Firechief and the gang keep them safe. Isn’t it wonderful how everyone works together to keep Busytown busy? 

VSO Primary Concert

We have a fieldtrip to the VSO coming up on Wednesday, February 26, from 10 – 11 am.  The concert is called “Inspector Tovey investigates the Instruments of the Orchestra”.  The sign up sheet and consent forms are by the student files.  Please have completed forms in to your teacher by Feb. 24.

Gong Xi Fa Chai – Happy Chinese New Year!

A field trip to learn about Celebrating Chinese New Year has been arranged to the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Gardens on Wednesday, January 29, 2014. In 2014, Chinese people are celebrating the year of the Horse.  People born in the year of the Horse are said to be energetic and active!   If you are interested in joining us for this field trip, please write your child’s name on the list beside the student files, fill out a consent form and place it in your teacher’s box.

 

Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society

Our school is participating in a food drive for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society.   Items can be dropped off in the box outside our classroom until December 19.

Following is a list of the most needed items:

canned fish and meat, canned soups, dry lentils, rice, pasta, canned fruits and vegetables, canned beans, peanut butter, pasta sauce, baby food and formula, low-sugar cereal

Bake Sale for Unicef

Students in the Tuesday/Thursday group came up with the idea to hold a school-wide bake sale to raise money for Unicef during recess and lunch on Tuesday, October 16.  If you would like to contribute baked items to the sale, you can bring them in either on Monday or Tuesday morning.

As we have only 2 weeks left of school, please return any resources that you may have borrowed to the Home Learner’s Resource shelf which is now located upstairs next to your files.  Thank you!

 

Reifel Bird Sanctuary

For families attending the field trip tomorrow to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, just a reminder that the program begins at 10 am so please arrive by 9:45 at the latest.  The entrance fee is $2.50 for adults and $1.50 for children.  Don’t forget to bring your binoculars!

Reifel Bird Sanctuary Field Trip

A field trip to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary has been organized for Wednesday, May 16, at 10am.  We will be participating in the K-3 “Just Hatched” program.  There are 25 tickets which are available on a first-come, first-served basis, with registered students taking priority over adults and siblings if a waiting list develops.  The sign-up sheet is on the parents’ table and the consent forms are in everyone’s files.  The cost is $1.50 per student, and $2.50 per adult.

Just a reminder that the performance of The Very Hungry Caterpillar on Thursday, April 26 at 1pm,  is at the Norman and Annette Rothstein Theatre (at the Jewish Community Centre) on 41st  Ave. @ Oak Street, not at the Waterfront Theatre.

Class photos will be taken on Tuesday, April 10, between 9 and 10 am.  We encourage everyone to be here for the photos if they can as we will be taking two different group photos – one for the Monday/Wednesday group, and another for the Tuesday/Thursday group.  Bring your best gap-tooth smile!

Celebrating Chinese New Year

Gong Xi Fa Cai!  We will be going on a field trip to the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Garden on Tuesday, January 24, at 10:30 am.  We will listen to stories and learn about the traditions of Chinese New Year.  Students will help scare away the New Year beast, take part in a lion dance parade, and help tell the story of “The Great Race”.  We will also do a special year of the dragon craft. 

The field trip is an hour long and the cost is $6 per student.  A sign up sheet, and field trip consent forms are by the student files.  If you wish to use your allotment to pay for the field trip, please make sure that you also fill out an allotment form.

Kindergarten Immunization

There will be an immunization clinic for Kindergarten students at Garibaldi on Wednesday, January 11, 2012.   There is a consent form from Vancouver Coastal Health in your files that needs to be completed and returned as soon as possible.
